African lullabies love songs for children play an important role in creating an intimate bond between parent and child. Mothers often sing them to their children who they carry on their backs as they work in the house or the fields. These children grow up experiencing music not as separate from life, but as an integral part of their own bodies' inner melodies and rhythms.
Lullabies serve a variety of purposes for the thousands of distinct cultural groups that are spread across the African continent. Some transmit stories of great leaders and ancestors as well as tales of famous dancers, drummers and musicians. In many lullabies the ancestral and spirit world plays a central role. It is not uncommon for the lyrics of a lullaby
to express gratitude to a God for a baby's health and well-being. Lullabies also teach children about morals, ethics, and responsibility to both family and community.
This project opened me up to the possibility of making money in the music industry. I got the job to produce African Lullaby unexpectedly. From 1995-2000 I was working as a web producer and contacted Ellipsis Arts, a record label that produced world music compilations, to see if they would be interested in having me create their website. They granted me a meeting, but instead of landing a freelance web job, I left as the future producer of African Lullaby. The CD received critical raves, and an award. It was a fantastically fulfilling experience.
After this CD was released I worked for several other record labels in varying capacities, but not as a producer. So I developed CD compilations during my free time, but I never had another CD commercially produced. Being artistic by nature I would create other prototypes and try my hand at selling the projects again, but I do not have a salesman's temperament. Working with
