Project Background

For years, long after I had moved back to New York from Rome, I woke up every morning unsettled, thinking of Giulio, an underwater photographer I met in 1990 who worked with Jacques Cousteau.
I would see an image of him bobbing like a buoy out at sea, miles out of reach. We met in Rome at Bar Della Pace near Piazza Navona and I fell in love with him that night. I knew he had a girlfriend, but every time he would swing by my office to take me out to lunch I forgot about her. Three months after we met, I returned home to New York and Giulio began to send
