Project Description

If Only It Were Love is a black and

white photography book and exhibit which tells the story of my love affair with Giulio and the hold it kept on me. The process of taking the pictures, re-reading our letters and bringing together these words and images gave me the opportunity to understand the nature of the emotions I had been struggling with. It combines photographs with excerpts from a correspondence between us over a period of seven years. The text reveals the thoughts and desires of a man who fantasizes about a woman far away, and the photographs illustrate the female's musings on empty promises and unfulfilled dreams.

The purpose of the book is to stimulate readers to reflect on their own intimate relationships and where they stand in the realm of fantasy or reality. We live in a culture where we're led to believe that other people can "make" us happy. However, self-reflection eventually reveals that true happiness can only be nurtured from within ourselves. Ironically, breakups, which are often colored by feelings of loss and sadness, are really the moments of liberation.
